How to Choose Who Manages Your Project
The question worth asking is not what a manager charges, but whose side they are on when a decision costs someone money.
Ask who pays them
A manager paid by the owner and a manager taking a margin on the build have different incentives. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you have engaged.
Ask for the failure stories
Anyone can show a finished project. Ask what went wrong on the last three and what they did about it — the answer tells you how they behave under pressure.
Insist on a written scope
"Project management" means very different things to different firms. What is included, what is charged separately, and who holds which contracts should be in writing before you start.
Check they will say no
A manager who agrees with every idea is not adding much. The value is in being told early that something will not work, while it is still cheap to change.
